Joshua Bell is My Hero

Joshua Bell is my new hero.

Last night, SC and I went to a performance of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Joshua Bell was the soloist in Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. He is absolutely phenomenal and is seriously like the rock star of violin players.

Check out his website at http://www.joshuabell.com.

I'd Like an Espresso, Please

Wooo! Good news! Tim from Back Bay Bicycle called to let us know that the bikes we ordered will arrive next week - just in time for the great weather.

Espresso

Me and SC ordered matching (they only come in one color) Dahon Espresso folding bicycles.

Now we will be able to ride up and down the Esplanade and along the Minuteman Trail. We can also drive our bikes down to the Cape and ride along the bike paths there. Damn... we are actually going to get some exercise.

Insult or Not?

NB told me that I look like a lesbian now. I'm not quite sure what to make of this comment. Do you?

The Good Body

I give two thumbs up and a standing ovation to Eve Ensler. This evening, SC and I saw a performance of The Good Body, performed by the one and only, Ms. Ensler.

The play was fantastic and left me thinking that Eve Ensler has to be the craziest (in a good way) playwright/performer/activist out there.

I told SC that one day she will be as famous as Eve Ensler and that she too will fill theatres up with women.

Nail Trimming

SC was able to take some time off from her playwriting last night so we were able to meet MK and LL for dinner at the Elephant Walk. The food was delicious and MK seemed quite happy with her special celiac menu.

I took Sydney to the vet this morning for her every-couple-month nail trimming. As usual, she meowed the whole way to and from the vet. I guess it must seem really loud and scary outside with the trucks and buses driving by and the wind blowing at her.

My nephew is winning the March Madness basketball bracket. Why does this not surprise me?

Travel Scare

I had a little bit of a scare last night when I saw on the news that 12 American tourists who were passengers on a Celebrity Cruise died while returning from an excursion in Chile. My parents left on Friday for Chile to go on a two week South American cruise. So naturally, my initial reaction was one of panic. And of course, the news blurb on TV was like thirty seconds long, so that didn't help.

Since I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep, I called the cruise line and they were able to confirm for me that my parents were not part of the group that was in the accident. Whew.

Then this morning I got an email from my dad letting us all know that they are okay. So that was a double relief.

My parents are tough travelers.

The Ether Dome

Today I got a brief glimpse of the Ether Dome in the Bulfinch Building of Mass General Hospital. The Bulfinch Building is the original MGH building.

Apparently, back in the day (pre-anesthetics), this dome was the operating room. Operations were done in this location because it was the highest point in the building. The screams of a patient could rise upwards to the sky. This way, the other patients in the hospital were protected from having to hear screams of bloody murder.

Scary stuff, eh?

So anyways, why the name "Ether Dome"? Apparently, ether was invented at MGH, and in 1846, the very first operation using a surgical anesthetic was performed right inside that dome (check out this painting depicting this historical event). Very, very cool. I guess they celebrate Ether Day every October 16th at MGH and throw a big party. Yay for anesthesia!

Okay, that's it for this history lesson.

Totebag Usage

Sydney has taken quite a liking to the YMCA totebag that SC won at MK and LL's marathon fundraiser [ see March 16, 2006 posting ].

Sydney on the totebag

For the past few days, this totebag has made it into Sydney's napping location rotation (hey - that rhymes!).

The Day after St. Patty's Day

My St. Patty's Day outing was exactly as I expected it to be. SC and I ventured out to the Littlest Bar to meet up with DB and her crew. Instead of getting to experience the bar from the inside, we got to experience it from the outside, in the cold, waiting in a line (albeit short) that was not going to move in the next century. From the outside, we got to listen to the Irish jig and also got to peer through the window at all the people cramped inside the Littlest.

We gave up for a bit and went across the street to another bar called Kennedy's. They were playing U2 ballads and thus, it was kind of lame. So we left and stood outside the Littlest for a couple more minutes before finally calling it quits.

So our great St. Patty's day adventure ended with us going home to drink our own beer and eat snow crab legs. The fun will continue today, when I make corned beef and cabbage for dinner. Cheers!

Glutten-free Beer

Last night was MK and LL's marathon fundraising event. It was held at Clery's and MK bought us a glutten-free beer to try (it was not my favorite).

There were prizes being given out and SC won a YMCA tote bag, MS won a Whole Foods glutten-free food basket, and JN won a YMCA membership (which she gave away to one of MK's friends).

I won nothing, but that is okay. I enjoyed watching the look on SC's face when she won the YMCA tote bag.

CO Detection

I just placed like my sixth Amazon order in the past month. Yes, I am a serial online shopper. In my latest order, I bought a carbon monoxide detector since a recent law was passed in Massachusetts requiring that all homes have one by March 31, 2006. You gotta love these new laws.

I don't like that Amazing Race is on at 10 PM this season. On the bright side, this allows SC and I to watch the full episode of American Idol. We are big fans of Chris Daughtry. He totally rocks out.

Lanes and Games

Everyone rocked out last night, but now we are stuck with a lot of good beer in our fridge. Hopefully people will stop by Friday for some pre- St. Patty's day beer consumption.

Today my nephew had a bowling birthday party at Lanes and Games. He had about sixteen friends in attendance. I played a few rounds of candlepin with my niece, my brother and SC. SC can no longer claim that she never beats me at anything.

Tonight I shall cook lemon-baked cod with a side of cauliflower. Yum.

Dog Pound

We spent all morning and early afternoon cleaning up the house for our Rock Star Guitar Hero party that is taking place this evening. The floors are shiney and the bathroom has that new shower liner smell to it. Mmmmmm...

For lunch, we tried out the new Spike's Junkyard Dogs that opened across the street. The hot dog and fries were good, but SC and I agreed that it was a little disappointing. I was expecting the most glorious chili cheese dog ever. Oh well.

Speaking of wiener dogs, I booked a flight to Los Angeles to see my pal NB. It's been five years since we've seen each other, so we will have much catching up to do. I'm very excited because NB has promised a five-bedroom house in Redondo Beach, a huge rib roast, flat screen TVs, temperpedic mattresses and beach cruiser bikes.

Check this out (from NB's email):

I can't wait. BOOK YOUR TICKET DAMNIT!! Bring me some boston baked beans for the BBQ. I'll go to my butcher and order a whole pig to roast or a rack of lamb!!

We can invite brendan and his HOT boyfriend over for dinner too. Anyone else you want to invite? Chef boner will make a GRAND FEAST!!

Should be an awesome time!

Project Runway

I hate it when I spill coffee on my hand.

I am so happy that Chloe won last night on Project Runway. I was rooting for her from the start. Finally, an Asian-American winning a reality TV show. Woooo!

Is it strange that most male fashion designers design clothing for women?

Blue Lobsters

SC and I had a special date this weekend at the aquarium. We checked out the penguins and turtles and jellyfish and lobsters (yum). Visiting the aquarium always makes me hungry. It's a good thing I don't work there because I think I'd be a huge risk to the wildlife.

Afterwards, we tried out a new Thai restaurant, Thai Basil, on Newbury Street. The restaurant itself is not new, but it was our first time eating there. It was quite tasty and I give it two thumbs up. SC also gives it two thumbs up, so it is unanimous.

Time for a Change

It was time for a change. So, this past weekend I gave my website an entire makeover. I was sick of looking at it. Plus, I figured I've been learning a lot of new tricks at work and it is finally time to use some of these methods.

In addition, I've decided to change my blog format from Diaryland to Blogger. I hope that those of you Diaryland fans will continue to read my Daily Ramblings at it's new location here at http://www.lindamateos.com/about/blog/.
